About Us

The Society was founded in 2002 to provide help to anyone whose ancestors lived in or passed through England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland after moving from Italy, and to gain a greater understanding of the wider picture of Italian migration.

The aims of the Society are to promote and encourage the study of genealogy for people of Italian heritage and to collect, index and make available any archival material to assist in their research. It is run solely by volunteers and an executive committee is elected annually. Any member may stand for the committee and become involved in the organisation of the Society.

The Anglo Italian Family History Society is a member of the Family History Federation.

Benefits of membership

Search Our Records Database - Coming soon!

Members can search our online database of the various records of Italians in the UK that have been collected by the Society. A lot of these records are not available elsewhere on the Internet.

Included in the database are records from:

St Peter's Italian Church, London - Coming Soon

St Peter's was opened in 1863 for Catholic immigrants in London. The Catholic Relief Act of 1791 gave Catholics freedom to worship but marriages between 1754 and 1837 had to be in the Church of England to be legally valid. The Anglo Italian Family History Society's volunteers transcribed baptism and marriage records and these will soon be available to view on our website.

World War I Military Service Agreement with Italy - Coming soon

During WW1 Britain passed legislation enabling agreements with allied governments to ensure aliens could be brought within the UK Military Service Acts and in 1917 the Kingdom of Italy came within the Acts. The agreement required Italian men of military age in the United Kingdom either to return to Italy for service or, if they remained, to be subject to the UK conscription laws.

Guida Generale degli Italiani in Gran Bretagna - Searchable lists of Names and addresses contained in the Guida are Coming Soon

A directory of Italians and Italian businesses in the United Kingdom produced under the auspices of the Italian Consular authorities and published by Ed. Ercoli e Figli, Ltd. (Casa Editrice-Proprietaria). It includes lists of individuals and firms, with addresses, and many business advertisements, some with photographs. The book also contains a number of biographies of notable Italians who were living and working in the UK at the time of publication.; these have been translated into English and can be viewed in Publications.  The Guida is a rare resource, not available on any other website. Members Only.

Italian Roots and Newsletters

Our journals 2002-2019 containing articles, family histories, memoirs, book reviews, photographs and advice are archived under Publications. The lists of contents are available for all to view, but the journals can only be viewed or downloaded from the Members' Area of our website. We also produce an Italian Roots Newsletter which appears periodically.

Webinars

During Covid-19, we started a series of online webinars covering a wide range of topics of interest to Society members. Some of these meetings were recorded and are available to view in the Members' area of this website.

Surname interests - Coming soon!

Members are invited to submit details of their research interests: for example, surnames, places (in Italy and elsewhere) and occupations.
