Gather together documents already in the family: birth, death and marriage certificates, memorial cards, family bibles, photographs, military records and medals, passports, alien registration booklets, other documents, letters and memorabilia.

Talk to family and friends; even if they claim to know nothing, by chatting around a subject and asking questions you will unearth a wealth of information. Record every clue, no matter how small; you never know how useful it will prove to be – though it pays to remain cautious when relying solely on memory. When you've built up a picture of what is already known begin searching official records, starting with those relevant to the family’s arrival and subsequent presence in the UK and Ireland.
