Our members support each other in tracing their Italian ancestry back to Italy.

Become a Member

Joining the Anglo-Italian Family History Society is very easy and really worthwhile if you are planning on looking into your Italian ancestry both here and abroad.  By joining the society you will gain access to our Members' Area where, among other things, there is a Reference Library, research information and lots of transcriptions from censuses and birth, death and marriage records.

During 2016-17 we will be reviewing and boosting the content of our Members Area. We are in a period of transition to Online Membership only and expect to phase out our quarterly printed journal - articles, photographs, research tips and information on exhibitions will instead be published online immediately they become available. Archived copies of Italian Roots will continue to be made available on our website for you to search, read or download at your convenience. Contributions from our Members will still be an important part of what we do.

Via the website, the society now only offers the following:

  • Online Membership - For £6.00 (£6.45 if paying via PayPal) a year Online Membership is convenient, affordable and brings the many benefits of our Membership Area content. The membership runs from 1st April until the following 31st March.

Benefits of Membership

Society meetings

The Society arranges some meetings and events, including talks, visits to archives and places of interest. Our AGM is held in May or June. Members can also get together at our stand at some family history fairs and the Clerkenwell Italian Procession in July.

Italian Roots

Is our journal with articles, advice and news of events, which is currently published quarterly. During 2016-17 we anticipate that our journal, Italian Roots, will change format, with articles and news published online as they become available, rather than accumulating quarterly. We expect to phase out the printed journal.

Search the Transcribed Records Index

Members can search the online Index of all the various birth, marriage, death, census, & occupational records of Italians in the UK that have been transcribed by the Society. A lot of these records are not available elsewhere on the Internet.

Library

The Society has no central location for its library. The librarian is happy to consult the items in the library to assist members with their research and to extend a supplied family group record.

Family Group Records

Members are encouraged to submit details of their ancestors for entry in our main indexes of Anglo-Italians. These are catalogued as Family Group Records, and may be consulted by members, and copies obtained. Our Co-ordinator can help you to look for further information about these families and others with the same name.

Surname interests

Members are invited to submit details of the surnames, places (in Italy and Britain) and occupations in which they are interested. These are added to our index of surname interests, posted on our website, so that you can make contact with others looking for the same surnames or researching the same topics.

The Anglo-Italian Index

Our master index records details of people with Italian names culled from a wide variety of sources, including trade directories, memorial inscriptions, coroners' reports, book indexes, historical membership lists, and newspapers.

The Index is now available on-line and can now be searched.

Look-ups

Volunteers provide free look-ups for members from a wide variety of books, directories and data CDs.

Your Family Tree

Members may lodge a copy of their family tree with the library, where it will be kept for posterity and may be consulted by other members.
